It was a nail-biting victory for the Essex Spartans on Sunday with the winning points scored in the fourth quarter after trailing 0-12 at the half.

A punt returned for a touchdown from #11 Norris Owusu, a push over the line from 8 yards from #21 Nick Walter and the kick conversion from #84 Mitch Arthur saw the Spartans secure their third season win from five games so far.

In a manner almost identical to their previous game against the East Kent Mavericks a fortnight previous, the Spartans fumbled on their first down, the ball was recovered by the opposition and the Blitz opened scoring in under a minute of action time.

Norris Owusu gained the Spartans a considerable position on the kick-off and then earned a first down for Essex, only to be outdone by a pick on the Blitz defense on the 4th down. #1 Dwayne Ferdinand tackled the ball carrier where he stood and the Blitz gained no significant position in their following drive.

WR #15 Rob Jelly and Owusu earned two sets of downs on the next drive but the Spartans were unable to convert their advantage into points. As the Blitz offense made confident strides towards the end zone, Spartans were penalised 15 yards for roughing and the Blitz easily upped their lead with a TD; Spartans #46 Kayode Babatunde blocked the conversion.

Owusu caught the ball on the kick-off return and saw off the entire Blitz defense as he carried for 80 yards for the touchdown; the conversion was missed but the Spartans appeared rejuvenated as they closed the half 6-12.

The second half was a display of powerful Offensive strategy from the Spartans, with Arthur sacking the Blitz QB on their third down and Jelly earning a set of downs right away and was only slightly short of a second. #13 Felix Olu also carried for twelve yards before the close of the third quarter, leaving the Spartans energetic but still seven points short of victory.

Spartans #21 Nick Walter pushed forwards from 8 yards at 50 minutes played for the touchdown, and the all-important converting kick from Arthur gave the Spartans the lead for the first time, and the winning score.

Essex Spartans return to training before back-to-back games against table-toppers Wembley Stallions on 9th and 16th July.
