The Spartans are incredibly proud to announce the addition of Tony Palmer to the organisation's Hall of Fame.

After a short playing career at running back, Tony went into coaching, before founding the Basildon Chiefs youth team in 1985. In 1991, the team moved into the senior league, and the seeds for the Essex Spartans were sown.

From that point, until his retirement at the end of the 2012 season, Tony expertly managed the team through many successes, including a Bowl appearance, many playoff appearances, and multiple promotions through the Divisions and Leagues.

Under his guidance, the Spartans became respected as one of the best managed teams in the country. Tony ensured the team always looked professional, and was always managed to the highest level.

Anyone who was fortunate enough to play for any of the teams Tony managed would agree that you could never question his dedication and enthusiasm for the sport, and that he always went the extra mile to ensure everything ran as smoothly as could be expected. His passion for the game was clear, and expressed many times on the sidelines during any one of the hundreds of games Tony attended.

Without question, the Spartans owe a great deal to "Uncle Tony", and it was a sad day for the organisation when Tony announced his retirement at the end of the 2012 campaign.

However, we do hope that Tony will continue to come down and support the team, as they look to continue the winning programme he worked so hard to achieve.
