Essex Spartans 14 - 40 Wembley Stallions

The west London based Wembley Stallions continued their winning streak to go 7-0 after Sunday’s victory over the Spartans.

Essex were unable to stop the Stallions taking an early lead in the first drive after two successive first downs from the Wembley offence; following the turnover the Spartans struggled to make significant yardage and the Stallions scored again to take an early 13-0 lead in the first quarter.

Spartans #13 Felix Olu made a successful push through the Stallions defense to gain some grounding, but fumbled the ball and the opposition recovered. A short-lived advantage however, as the first of three successive interceptions #16 Joe Trigg intercepted the ball and ran 50 yards downfield.

The Stallions returned straight away and intercepted the ball from QB Rob Jelly, but gained little from it as Spartans #14 Festus Olu then intercepted and returned for the touchdown from the 40-yard line. A PAT from #52 Tom Kitchen put the first points on the board for the Spartans at the 5-minute warning on the half.

Wembley were quick to extend their lead once again after running the ball from 15 yards and extending the gap 19-7. A combined offensive effort from #21 Nick Walter and Felix Olu got the ball within two yards of the end zone and a final push in the third down from Walter, along with another PAT from Kitchen brought the Spartans back into the game 19-14 at the half.

The Stallions started back with two successive false starts and lost ten yards, but Stallions #33 scored his first of three second-half touchdowns shortly after. The Spartans looked likely for a comeback after Stallions #59 threw a punch and lost 15 yards in the penalty, and a first down from Spartans #29 Oli Huke was positive, but Wembley #33 steamed through again for another TD and the PAT was good, leaving the Spartans fatigued and trailing 33-14 with the fourth quarter still to go.

A first down from #24 Dwayne Ferdinand and a fumble recovery from #3 Ryan Lines wasn’t quite enough to get the Spartans back in the game and a final TD from Wembley #33 sealed the game 40-14.

The Essex Spartans and Wembley Stallions face each other again in Essex on Sunday 16th July.
