Essex Spartans American Football U17 Head Coach Steve Watson has led his team of 14, 15 and 16-year olds to unprecedented success in Spartans history this season, with a perfect 12-0 over three local teams Colchester Gladiators, Hertfordshire Cheetahs and Bedfordshire Blackhawks.
The final tournament was held in Grays last Saturday in which the Spartans completed their outstanding season, having gone into the tournament already the champions of the division. For proud HC Watson however, his praises were not just limited to his own team.
He said: “The real stars of the day for me were the Bedfordshire Blackhawks, who played all three games with only five players. “They were unfatiguable in their efforts and that, to me, is really impressive stuff.”
The youngsters play a 5v5 version of the contact sport with games lasting 30 minutes of playing time, instead of the NFL standard 60.
“Massive thanks to Herts Cheetahs, Beds Blackhawks and Colchester Gladiators for attending; it was a truly memorable day down at Thurrock Rugby Club with three victories to give us that perfect 12-0 season record.
“The players, coaches and backroom staff have all worked so hard to get here, and they thoroughly deserve that undefeated record and Britbowl place.”
The Essex Spartans U17 team will return to training throughout the summer ahead of the Britbowl finals, scheduled for early September in Sheffield.
The Essex Spartans Academy are always recruting new players or looking for anyone able to assist the team in an off-field role, and would encourage anyone interested to contact us via email.
