Essex Spartans 30 - 8 Berkshire Renegades

Sunday 28th July saw the first victory for the Essex Spartans under-19 squad away to the Berkshire Renegades.

The Spartans travelled in numbers and came together in a “fantastic team performance” to beat a well-drilled Renegades side 30-8. The game started slowly with the Renegades taking the lead 2-0 thanks to a safety but the Spartans quickly bounced back with a safety of their own, tying the game 2-2.

Then a fantastic interception, by Spartan safety #44 Toby Garner, was taken to the house for 6 points putting the Spartans ahead, as they now lead 8-2. Using this momentum the lead was quickly added to with a touchdown pass caught by wide receiver #11 James McCarthy, thrown by quarterback #12 Ben Marlow, extending the lead to 12 points as the score now read Spartans 14 Renegades 2.

The game calmed down after the flurry of Spartan points, but just before the half Essex scored again, this time a rushing touchdown by wide receiver #80 Luke McCarthy, rounding out the first half with the score Spartans 20 Renegades 2.

The second half scoring opened with a rushing touchdown for the hosts, punched in after a long drive making the score Spartans 20 Renegades 8, after a missed 2-point conversion. This ignited the Spartan offence, initiating a downfield march in retaliation and a hand off to running back #34 Max Lucy who, thanks to numerous downfield blocks, ran in for the offences third score of the game. The touchdown was followed up by a successful point after from #29 Aidan Barclay, extinguishing any chance of a Berkshire comeback with the score Spartans 27 Renegades 8.

Then with the final play of the game the special teams took to the field to attempt a 28 yard field goal, which was kicked by #29 Aidan Barclay, leaving the final score Essex Spartans 30 Berkshire Renegades 8.

After the game academy head coach Steve Watson said “They (Spartan players) played hard against a good Berkshire side and all their efforts to date paid off with a convincing win.”

The Spartan defence contributed heavily to their first win by scoring 8 points and getting 2 interceptions via defensive captain #44 Toby Garner, not to mention a first half shut out! Take nothing away from the offence who scored 18 points and special teams who added a valuable 4 points to the grand total. No doubt these Spartans will be riding the crest of this victory till their next game on the 2nd of August #RollTide
