In memory of the late Spartans founder Tony Palmer, the Essex Spartans Academy have established the Tony Palmer Man of The Year award.
This award will be entrusted to the most worthy member of the Spartans Academy who shares the values and displays the traits of Tony Palmer, chosen by the Academy training staff. The award consists of Palmer’s number #28 jersey, and will be worn by the awarded academy player for the entirety of the season.
The first recipient of the Tony Palmer Award was presented to Under-17s and Under-19s middle line-backer Owen Attard on Saturday night during the Tony Palmer Memorial fixture against London Blitz B.
Academy Head Coach Steve Watson awarded the honour to Attard after a few words about Tony.
The jersey was presented to Owen by Sue Palmer – Tony’s widow – and also in the presence of his daughter Donna, provoking a heartfelt swell of applause from the whole ground.
All our thoughts and prayers from everyone at the Essex Spartans go out the Tony’s family during this difficult time.
