The Essex Spartans are delighted to announce the appointment of Steve Watson to the role of Academy Head Coach. Steve, who receives the promotion after spending last season as offensive co-ordinator, has been involved in the sport of American football as a player and coach for over 2 decades, the majority of which have been spent with the Spartans.
“It is both a pleasure and an honour to accept the role of Head Coach for the Essex Spartans Youth and Junior teams”, said Watson. “Last season saw the Spartans take enormous steps forward, and to be given the opportunity to continue this development and give something back to a sport that has been such a key part of my life was something I simply could not turn down.
“I’d like to express my deepest thanks and gratitude to outgoing Head Coach Steve Mitchell, who’s leadership and guidance ensured the Spartans were able to return to the playing field at the Youth and Junior levels after a long absence, and who presented me with my first coaching opportunity. We have a very talented roster of dedicated and hard-working team members, and I am both excited and optimistic for a very bright future working with these players, my fellow coaches, the Spartans committee, and of course, our fans!”
Spartans Chairman Ray Towey added; “Steve showed great passion and commitment when he took on the youth/junior offensive co-ordinator role and it was to his great credit that the offense helped the youth team to 5 wins in their first season. Steve will now bring those qualities to the Head Coach position and I know he will be already getting to work. Join me in welcoming Steve as Head Coach and give him your support and encouragement. Roll Tide!”
Watsons first activity as Head Coach will be the “come and try” sessions, aimed at recruiting new players for the 2015 campaign. The first of three such sessions will be held at the Spartans home ground of Hannakins Farm, Billericay, on Wednesday, October 29th.
