Spartans Youth boosted by Sport England grant

Youth and junior football will return to Hannakins Farm, thanks to a grant awarded to the orgainsation by Sport England.

The entire Spartans organisation have been working tirelessly behind the scenes to enable youngsters aged between 14 and 19 to take part in our exciting and fast-paced sport, and thanks to the diligent work of Chairman Ray Towey and the youth committee, the dream is now a reality.

Following two successful friendly matches against Brit Bowl finlists Kent Exiles in 2013, Spartans Youth Head Coach Steve Mitchell took his teams to the next level and the teams will return to competitive play this year after a long absence. The Sport England grant has been used to purchase the equipment the teams needs to start their quest for glory, including player equipment such as helmets and shoulder pads, training equipment, and two new sets of gameday jerseys.

Delighted Spartans Chairman Ray Towey said; “Everybody at Essex Spartans is delighted that Sport England have given us this grant. We are delighted to be able to offer young people across Essex the chance to play the action-packed sport of American Football competitively.”

Head Youth Team Coach Steve Mitchell added; “We extend a huge thank you to everyone at Sport England, and to all the members of the Spartans organisation, who have enabled us to offer the youth in our area the option of playing our sport.

“The great thing about American Football is it’s variety – there’s always a position for you. With the new kit we have ordered, all you need to play football is the essentials such as a gumshield and footwear, and we couldn’t be more excited about playing in League competiton this season.

“Last year we had a squard of over 20 committed individuals – this year, our numbers have increased and it’s really very encouraging to watch our future stars take to the sport so well. I can’t wait to see them get their first taste of American football in the Spartans black and gold!”

It’s never too late to get involved – come down to Hannakins Farm any Sunday from 11:00am to get involved!
