The Essex Spartans have been requested by Basildon District Council to provide players and coaches to go into schools around the area to promote what is to them a relatively new sport for youngsters.
Although the Spartans already have a good youth programme, providing four players to the seniors last year, local schools are not that aware of it.
Tracey Davies Sports Development Officer for Basildon Council commented, “It would be great to run a programme of firstly class room sessions then practices to encourage the youth of the area to take up the sport.”
General Manager Tony Palmer said, “It is a good opportunity to take, as getting into schools with the sport during class time has always been quite hard what with so much time given to soccer and rugby.”
The Spartans look forward to promoting the sport and also trying to swell the ranks of their youth and junior programmes and who knows even the seniors further down the line.
